I recently put a request through social services on behalf of a client for bathing needs. I was horrified to be advised that the waiting time for an O.T to come out and do an assesment is currently 18months. Quite frankly I find this unacceptable, and intend to bring it to light through my local M.P. I ask myself how any government can stand on a platform of supporting people in there own homes, with this kind of service being offered. I would be interested in feedback from anyone trying to get assistance with daily living from there local Social Services, and how they are finding the experience.

I asked for a shower to be installed over my bath when I first moved to Hanover 18 months ago. The initial reaction from a senior Manager was that I had accepted the accommodation without a shower so Tough! I argued the toss and finally they agreed to apply to have one installed. Two months later I had heard nothing and on enquiring was told there was no record of my request. I was furious and pushed a bit harder, finally got an OT assessment (for which there was a 6 week wait)

Have just had my shower installed (Wonderful) and it has taken, in all, 8 months - but I gather that was quite quick! I was told that Hanover have a budget for improving facilities in the flats as well as maintenance but when I first applied the budget had been used up. So my application was submitted, eventually, to a charity called Anchor Staying Put who met the cost for me. My initial application was turned down because my physical disability(limited use of my left arm) was not sufficient to warrant having a shower. However, because I suffer from panic attacks I am unable to get into a bath as it makes me feel trapped, so they finally agreed that I should be funded.

I hope this helps your cause, I couldn't agree more - the State is saving millions by encouraging people to look after themselves, so every facility should be provided to help us to do that. I think it is good that older people remain independent but we shouldn't be pushed into the wilderness to fend for ourselves or feel that we are not supported by the HA management.

Hi Elaine. Yes this is very frustrating. Getting your G.P to refer to Social Service can add weight to your request. Depending on the vulnerability of the service user, it may be appropriate to get a Nursing Assessment of the District Nurse.
Unfortunately many ss depts are overwhelmed with referals. If your looking to install a new bathroom have a look at Anchor Staying Put www site. Hope this helps.
