My council have just introduced this facility. If you like swimming it's worth asking your own council if they are offering this as well.

----------------------------------------------------------------

"TORBAY and South Hams have taken the plunge by handing the over 60s free swimming in all their council owned pools.

But next door Teignbridge has refused to dip its toes in the free swimming waters.

And every Devon council except Plymouth has so far rejected Government moves to deliver the same free swimming package to the under 16s — afraid of the financial impact it would have on a tourist area visited by hundreds of thousands of families every year.

As of yesterday anyone who is 60 or over can swim free of charge in municipal pools across Torbay and the South Hams — and that includes anyone visiting the areas from anywhere else in the UK.

In Torbay people will be able to dive into the new scheme allowing them to swim for free, during public swimming sessions, at the Waves Leisure Pool Torquay, Torbay Leisure Centre, Paignton, Swim Torquay and Admiral Swimming Centre, Brixham.

Mayor of Torbay Nick Bye said: "While this is an optional scheme for local authorities and the funding allocation from Government falls short of what is required, we have done everything possible to ensure we are a part of it and fulfil our commitment to providing accessible sport facilities for everyone in the Bay."

In most local authorities you can get a free swim pass if you are claiming any benefits. It's worth ringing your local sports centre to ask for a form, it isn't widely advertised, but it is one activity that we oldies should take part in. It is low impact (good for our joints) and aerobic (good for our hearts, lungs and circulation)......and it's FUN!!

".and it's FUN!!"

Yes Margaret, as long as it's not when school kids are using it...and the infernal Wave Machine, which we have at our local pool is switched on!
