Well, where to start? I really liked his music and as a little chap in the Jackson Five I thought he was adorable. What happened? He became so odd and eccentric - possibly worse - that I am sure he alienated all but his most adoring fans.

All the same, his fantastic musical productions provided the soundtrack to the 80s and 90s and eventually that is what he will be remembered for and identified with, by most people.

It seems he might be better off out of it, anyway, as he rarely appeared to be happy or satisfied with his life.

Good summary Margaret...

He encompassed the extremes of good and bad. I wonder if the truth will now come out about the alleged child abuse, as you cannot libel or slander a dead man?

It would be a shame if anyone did, as he can't defend himself now. I've no doubt someone will try to make some money from some secret revelation !!

My view...Let bygones be bygones and let him rest in peace....he will certainly be remembered for his great music

Cheers

As John says "someone will try to make some money" so we will have all sorts of outpourings, in any case we'll never know the truth (who really wants to?) but if it quacks like a duck, waddles like a duck - it's probably a duck, don't you think?
I was shocked by Robin Gibb's ill-advised response on the radio the next morning, which was to the effect that he considered all the bad press MJ suffered to be on a par with the treatment of Oscar Wilde....WHAT????!! Is he trying to say that paedophilia will eventually be socially acceptable in the same way that homosexuality is no longer illegal? I was stunned by his remarks. He sounded upset and I noticed the Beeb did not repeat the broadcast so I imagine it was pulled. They were probably inundated by outraged emails/phonecalls!!
I see the Sundays are full of MJ's death - let's hope it's a 9 day wonder.

Best

Hi Margaret,
I see that 'maggot' of a dad of his is trying to do the same with micheal's children as he did with him when he was younger.....trying to make money out of them, so the news reviews have said. I hope he doesn't get anywhere near them.

Cheers

I do sympathise with your response to the newspaper reports, John, but - unfortunately - that's showbiz. Everyone is exploiting everyone else and the public - with their insatiable appetite for celebrity gossip - keep the pump primed. As long as we clamour for salacious stories about the rich and famous the media will provide them or create them if necessary - well, it keeps them in business doesn't it? I don't know whether MJ was abused by his father or not and I don't know if his father has tried to get control of the children - but I know that running the stories has sold a lot of newspapers/magazines all over the world.
The trouble is (in my opinion) we are all fairly bored leading our mediochre lives and want to observe something entertaining hence the popularity of 'soaps' - whereby we can live a vicarious life of excitement/stimulation without risk. Similarly, we can lead a vicarious life of glamour, via the celebs, without having to shift from our comfortable sofa!
I am fairly cynical about what is churned out by the media, I'm afraid, and tend to think that Rupert Murdoch's version of 'Life as we Know it' would not be my idea of paradise. Following that line of thought to its logical conclusion would result in me becoming a recluse, I have moderated it a bit so that I can remain a member of society!! We are all self-serving when you get right down to it, eh?

Great to hear your comments....keep 'em coming!

Best wishes

Marg
