Hanover World

Is it me? In the latest issue, in the article on Homeowners' insurance it says "....it was decided that Hanover would not take commission from an insurer......Instead, an excess for each claim made would be imposed...." How does that work? The insurers do not pay commission to Hanover for the business they bring to the insurers, but they instead make a charge on the policyholders, should they claim?? Either I have completely misunderstood what is being said or the wording is inadequate and gives a different interpretation to that intended.

As a tenant I am not affected but in the interests of clarity can someone please explain how taking money from claimants is a replacement for paying money (in commission) to Hanover?

Hi Margaret, I will ask the appropriate member of staff to clarify this for you

Some articles are a bit misleading in Hanover News, I thought we'd come to accept that by now.

Another example; on page 6...What is Greenshoots....Who can apply for funding?.......it mentions about raising 'sum funds'.....to go toward your project. How much is 'sum funds ?

Cheers

John

I thought that Hanover News was for residents to read about individual estates, photographs etc. as I remember the old format was very much about news happening on regional estates where photographs were published of things of interest to each and every resident. I have to say that I and many of the residents on our estate are very disappointed in this so called Hanover News it is mainly corporate news. I do not know what residents on other estates think but in the main most of our News magazines are promptly put into the bin what a waste of money. Perhaps Hanover will take note and go back to publishing the old format which used to be a lot more interesting.

Hi Daf,
I'm with you on this one. I noticed that they want some individual residents for Residents Council, but if it is held in London, like the Management Committee and you don't like London, or find it difficult getting there, then it does rather exclude those that would like to take part. Plus, when you look at the value for money area, I'm sure there would be cheaper venues than London, with the possibility of it being more central to the country, where getting there may be easier.

Thanks Ruth, does anyone proof read the News before it's printed? I am sure they meant to say something else.....it's just the way it reads (hopefully)

Hi John, many of the recent Residents' Council meetings have been held in St Neots, cambridgeshire for the reasons you mention. I know St Neots is much easier for many residents to get to, particularly those in the North and as you say the venues are cheaper. Unfortunately because it is a national body, members do need to be willing to travel to meetings. The council itself discussed the best locations to meet and have tried London, Peterborough and St Neots in the last year and settled on St Neots. This discussion is likely to happen again if there is an influx of new members.

Are you interested in joining the Residents' Council, if so send me a private message and we'll have a chat about it. The same applies to any other Hanoverworld member who may be interested, please contact me.

Hi Margaret, we have a reading panel of residents made up from INtouch members who proof read selected articles and check they are written in plain English before going to print, I'm surprised they didn't ask for more clarity for this article, perhaps it was a late edition. I will do a bit of investigating to check that the panel is still working as it should be.

Hi Ruth,
I suppose it's a tribute to Hanovers' success being that the organisation is 'National'. If it was a more local Housing Provider, then maybe more residents would be able to take part. Maybe one day all Housing Associations will be split up into Regional Housing Associations to make them more managable locally.

Cheers

Hi John, regional housing associations are able to hold residents meetings and provide events that we can't because we are national. One of my friends rents from a local housing association here in Leicester and they are putting on dinner dances for their residents and providing a day trip out to Western- Super-Mare for only £4.00. At the moment the opposite seems to be happening and more and more housing associations are merging and crossing regions, so we are watching closely to see how they manage resident engagement. You may have noticed that we are trying to make resident engagement much more local, with the new repairs process and local agreements engaging with residents on their estates. The role of the new Residents' Council is to scrutinise our resident engagement and make sure as many residents as possible are able to be involved, influence and improve Hanover's services. Sorry for all the Hanover speak, but it is my job.
